Public Functionary invites emerging visual artists to submit a solo exhibition proposal for their 2024 exhibition program. Public Functionary will co-produce the selected project in their Upstairs Gallery 247 at the Northrup King Building in Minneapolis.

Public Functionary will support the exhibiting artist with a $1,000 stipend. PF will provide curatorial support, installation, promotion, design, and additional resources as needed. The exhibition will open in August or September 2024 and will run for 4 weeks, depending on what fits best in the schedule.

  • The proposed project reflects a considered, researched exhibition concept with works in a developed stage.
  • Artists who are new to solo presentation and can benefit from the co-production support provided by Public Functionary.
  • Format is open to interpretation and can range from a more traditional display of paintings to an immersive experience.
  • Option to connect to the themes of concurrent 2024 exhibitions in the downstairs gallery surrounding intergenerational relationships to culture and orientations to space.

  • Cultivating dialogue, collaboration, and support among artists and audiences for a sense of belonging and a reciprocal community of practice.
  • Platforming resilient cultural practices and aesthetics. Utilizing exhibition as a space for societal change, showcasing work that advocates for liberation and truth.
  • Understanding and celebrating the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, and ability that shape individuals’ experiences. Elevating narratives that challenge dominant perspectives, drawing inspiration and knowledge from lived experiences.
  • Approaching curation with care, transparency, and accountability, respecting artists’ autonomy, and presenting their work in alignment with their intentions and values.

They especially encourage early career artists to apply. Public Functionary is dedicated to supporting artists who identify as Black, Indigenous, people of color, queer, trans, or gender non-conforming.

Please submit a proposal detailing your exhibition idea using their submission form. Your submission should give them a clear idea of what you hope to accomplish with the exhibition, and demonstrate an ability to produce a solo body of work for presentation within the timeline.

Please provide up-to-date work samples and any relevant materials.
