Franconia Sculpture Park  2020 Artist Opportunities

All Applications are due January 15, 2020

Located in the scenic St. Croix River Valley, Franconia Sculpture Park is a nonprofit arts organization operating a 43-acre outdoor sculpture park, active artist residency, and community arts programming. Franconia was founded in 1996 by a small group of professional artists who envisioned a supportive artist residency community in a rural setting. Today, this vision has been achieved through an active artist residency and public programming that serves over 150,000 annual visitors.

Franconia Sculpture Park’s Artist Residency programs provide the opportunity for artists and/or artist teams to create ambitious new projects, interact and collaborate with fellow artists, and impact the public through sculpture, land art, socially engaged art, multidisciplinary art, installation, and/or performative works of art.

Opportunity 1: Fellowship Artist Residency

Located in the scenic St. Croix River Valley, Franconia Sculpture Park is a nonprofit arts organization operating a 43-acre outdoor sculpture park, active artist residency, and community arts programming. Franconia Sculpture Park was founded in 1996 by a small group of professional artists who envisioned a supportive artist residency community and outdoor museum. Today, this vision has been achieved through an active artist residency program that serves over 40 artists each year and public programming that serves over 150,000 annual visitors.

Franconia Sculpture Park’s Fellowship Artist Residency Program provides the opportunity for artists and/or artist teams to create ambitious new projects, interact and collaborate with a community of makers, and impact the public. Artists at any stage in their career, working in sculpture, installation, land art, social practice and performance are welcome to apply for residencies for a minimum of three weeks and a maximum of three months between April 5 and September 15, 2020. Selected artists will each receive a private bedroom and shared workspace to create new work at Franconia, along with a $5,000 award to fund their project.

Opportunity 2: Intern Artist Residency

The Intern Artist Residency Program at Franconia offers undergraduate and graduate students, as well as emerging artists the opportunity to create public artwork, develop their artistic practice, receive mentorship from professional artists-in-residence, and participate in public engagement programs while in residency at Franconia. The rural setting and the chance to work along-side peers, mid-career artists, and visiting art curators creates a dynamic setting for artists to grow, learn, and mature.

The Intern Artist Residency Program began with the park’s founding in 1996 and has grown to support more than 200 emerging artists to date. Recognized by the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts for program excellence, the program is designed to bridge the gap between the academic world of artistic training and a professional career. In exchange for housing, meals, and studio space, selected artists’ commit to working for Franconia Sculpture Park for five hours per day, six days per week.
