vsa MINNESOTA - The State Organization on Arts and Disability

On Tuesday, December 13 artists and arts patrons with disabilities, as well as arts or cultural organization representatives, are invited to a meeting in Marshall or Windom to share what is going well in creating or attending art, and what barriers remain to be able to participate in the arts. The Dec. 13 meetings are in:

Marshall: 2:00 to 3:30 PM at Southwest Minnesota Regional Arts Council office, 114 N. 3rd St.

Windom: 6:00 to 7:30 PM at Cottonwood County Historical Museum, 812 4th Avenue.

The 90-minute community meetings are part of a series of community meetings in nine towns conducted by VSA Minnesota, the state organization on arts and disability. Refreshments will be provided. The purpose is to gather feedback on what artists with disabilities have been doing, how arts patrons with disabilities are able to attend shows and exhibits, and questions or solutions offered by area arts organizations. If there are barriers, such as transportation or lack of art materials or classes, or questions about effective ways of serving people with disabilities in the arts, VSA Minnesota will offer suggestions or seek to find solutions in 2017. Regional Arts Council staff will also have information about their programs.

VSA Minnesota currently offers Emerging Artist Grants for Minnesota artists with disabilities (deadline is January 17, 2017), a statewide Accessible Arts Calendar, professional development for teachers and artists to work with students with disabilities, exhibits by artists with disabilities, and other accessibility resources and assistance for artists, patrons and organizations.
