Exterior Mural Artist (RFQ)
City: Slayton, MN
Salary: Based on Bid Proposal
Job description
The city of Slayton is seeking an exterior mural artist to paint a 16’ x 37’ wall on Broadway Avenue of Slayton MN. The themes of the mural were compiled from surveys already conducted and information gathered from focus group discussions. From this research we have found the top themes are “Grain farming,” “Education and academic achievement,” “Quality of life and ability to thrive for adults and children,” “Natural resources including lakes, parks, hunting, fishing, camps, and sports.” Additional themes are “History” including Native Americans as first occupants and pioneer settlement as well as Slayton being the “county seat” and “hub city.”
We are looking for a unique style portraying the themes and making this mural stand out from others in the area. We are thinking of a collage to include several representations from the above listed themes, but are open to suggestions. The materials used must be of highest quality for exterior application and guaranteed workmanship regarding the application to the north facing ? wall. This will require the artist to assess the integrity of the wall, give a written prognosis of the wall durability and written guarantee of durability and longevity of the final project.
If possible, we would like the chosen artist to be willing to allow students to assist or take part in some fashion. Also, we would like the artist to be open to residents viewing the process. It is understood that they must be respectful to the artist at all times.
Qualifications or requirements
The top 3 artists will each receive a stipend of $350 to visit Slayton and the surrounding area, view the wall, obtain resources at the county museum and library, and meet with members of the committee. The goal is to give these artists a personal experience with our community.
After that, the 3 artists will be given 3-4 weeks to develop 1-3 renderings of their interpretations of the themes along with a bid proposal including details for any additional expenses or work not done by the artist. Once these renderings are submitted, the most outstanding artist will be chosen and notified. Once the artist accepts the position, a contract and timeline will be drawn up and finalized. This will be set forth in accordance with the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council Legacy Grant process and carried out through their funding procedures.
