Please help SMAC welcome our next gallery exhibit featuring the art photography of Ferman Woodberry (Jackson). This exhibit will be in the SMAC Gallery in downtown Marshall at 509 West Main Street from November 7 – December 20, 2024.
Woodberry received an Artist Equity grant in 2023 to take advanced photography classes and purchase equipment that would take his photography to a new level.
Meet Ferman Woodberry
Born and raised in Boston, MA. I grew up surrounded by people, great architecture and easy access to art museums. I took a photography class as a teenager at the local Boys Club and fell in love with the process of developing rolls of film and manipulating the negative to get the desired effect.
I dabbled with art growing up but it wasn’t until I moved to Minnesota in 1978 to attend Gustavus Adolphus College that I began to explore art as a legitimate field of study. I took every art class available except photography and weaving (they just didn’t fit into my schedule). My goal was to experience as much as possible while at college because I figured that the resources would not be available to me after graduation.
I have never been very good at articulating my style, my goal is to honor the subject matter but add my personality/emotion to it in some way. When I take a photograph, I look at the shapes, textures, and pattern possibilities, I envision how I will change the subject matter by using digital manipulation techniques; a little more advanced than what I learned to do in the darkroom with the enlarger, to show the form, movement, and beauty that I see in everyday things. I currently live in Jackson, MN where I volunteer as the curator of the Jackson Center for the Arts.
