Nan Karr Kaufenberg
Nan Karr Kaufenberg began working with print making in 1990 while taking art classes at Southwest Minnesota State University. After experimenting with etchings, wood and linoleum block prints, linoleum block printing became her medium of choice. Kaufenberg explained that, "Linoleum works best for carving the curved lines and details that fit my drawing style and I can do my work in nearly any location with a few simple tools."
Early on she began adding watercolor to the block prints. "The multi-step process of creating the prints is very enjoyable," Kaufenberg continued. "Once I have the image drawn onto the linoleum block the next step is carving the image into the block. After the carving is completed, I roll oil based ink onto the block and then place the paper over the inked block and either hand rub the print with a wooden spoon or run the block and paper through my hand-cranked linoleum block print press. Each print is handmade, whether I use the press or a wooden spoon to rub the ink onto the paper. Once the ink is completely dry, I apply the watercolor to each print. An edition

of prints is based on the artist's proof; to maintain conformity.
"I enjoy simplifying scenes and images - deciding what to leave in and what to take out. The best compliment I have had on my work was at an art fair when a customer walked into my art tent and said, 'It looks like the sun came out in here!' She commented on the cheerful quality of my block prints. If I can bring a smile to someone's face, that's a bonus to me."
Kaufenberg has art degrees from the University of Minnesota and Southwest State Minnesota University. She has received over 20 awards for her artwork at shows and art fairs in the last 23 years and is a recipient of SW MN Arts Council Individual Artist grants in 1993 and 2007. She has exhibited her work throughout Minnesota and currently resides in Redwood Falls.
The public is invited to visit the SMAC art gallery for a reception from 5:00 - 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 15, 2015 (date rescheduled due to weather forecast). Enjoy live music during the reception. Regular Gallery hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to noon and 1:00 to 4:30 pm.
