Lois Haak
Haak, a resident of rural Echo graduated from Southwest Minnesota State University in 2010 with a double major: Creative Writing/Literature and secondly in Art: Studio Concentration. She currently works at Echo Charter School in a special needs capacity. An artist with multiple areas of interest, Haak enjoys painting, printmaking, and sculpture and also writes poetry, fiction and nonfiction.
Lois describes this exhibit: "Printmaking is a celebration of line. I hope my prints express the fluidity, variety, strength and energy lines give to art. Each line made in a print is a building block for the image as a whole as in no other art process. I hope the viewer will remember I am an emerging artist and see the growth looking at this body of work. As I state this, I still hope to invoke some emotion, joy, or thought from each viewer. I love the strong color of my work. Color with

the energy of line in my prints makes them seem ready to move or speak.
What I love best about this whole project was the challenge and exploration of making prints without the expense of a press. I loved that I could learn and then teach others how to make prints from things easily obtained and a little ingenuity. Many of my prints are mono prints created with metallic inks and found natural objects. Others were created on various linoleum and linoleum type plates. I also used scratch foam to etch some others. I even experimented with creating built up plates using foam craft squares. For press pressure, I used heavy wooden spoons, different types of barens. I manipulated pressure. I hand colored the plates, I even manipulated some of the coloring after printing with paint or colored pencil trying to make something new. I hope I convey art is an adventure worth taking."
