Lisa Bergh & Andrew Nordin
Lisa Bergh and Andrew Nordin of New London will exhibit at the SMAHC Gallery July 11 through August 30, 2013. Bergh and Nordin live in New London and have busy lives as art instructors at Ridgewater College - both Hutchinson & Willmar campuses - and at St. Cloud State University. In addition, they are the founders/directors of ARThouse; a residential, phantom exhibition space specializing in contemporary art & ideas. Bergh and Nordin both produce contemporary art and will exhibit individual works at the SMAHC Gallery.
Bergh describes her work: "There seems to be an endless supply of images seeking residency in my visual memory. I see everything and I overlook it all — Electrical towers floating by on long drives. Air bubbles frozen in the lake. Mounds of moss on the road to Sunburg. All those pink balloons from her third birthday left suspended overhead. The filigree my husband keeps painting; in pink, gold leaf, and blue. My son's free National Geographic world map plotted methodically for future adventures. The clouds overhead when we took the boat for summer's last picnic lunch on the island. Old charts and new math. Pink graffiti on printer paper taped to dining room walls, salon style. Did I have that experience? Was that my image? Or did I see it on Instagram? — My drawings are informed and influenced by all of it. It is an

poetics of this visual chaos through a personal etymology of mapping."
As for Nordin, he believes "an artist should be a researcher, thinker and maker. One must work with their head, heart and hands in order to create honest art. I choose materials to work with that range from found wood and materials from dumpsters, to traditionally prepared panels, powdered pigments and gold leaf. Using formats such as the multiple, shaped panels, and altar-piece inspired variables, the work questions the purpose of art objects and illustrates an imperfect search for the sublime. This current investigation engages with formal elements found in painting, specifically the phenomenon of ‘push-pull’: a battle between colors and shapes, fighting for advancing and receding space. Surface qualities and graphic compositions drive these paintings, and the making of them becomes very game like, with subtle reference to trompe l'oeil gestures and the artifice of representation."
The public is invited to visit the SMAHC gallery in downtown Marshall to meet Lisa Bergh and Andrew Nordin at a reception from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, July 11, 2013. Peter Lothringer will perform live jazz guitar music from 5:30—6:15 pm. Regular Gallery hours are Monday - Friday, 8 am to noon and 1:00 to 4:30 pm. Open until 7:00 pm on Thursdays from July 11 through August 15 during Thursdays on Third.
