Gene Stukel | Granite Falls | Photography
The SMAHC Gallery will feature the photography of Gene Stukel of Granite Falls from January 9 through March 2 2012. Stukel describes his work:
The landscape can be seen and felt. I believe that creating and observing images has to do with one’s frame of reference and perspective. We all see the landscape in different ways, creating endless possibilities for its interpretation. The interpretation of a landscape image can be further expanded by a photographer’s manipulation of the image encouraging the viewer to react and comment.
I found this project to be very challenging but also rewarding. I was attempting to look beyond what I was photographing and see what possibilities the image might hold. I believe that my efforts provided me with results that I had not anticipated.

supportive and helpful. I believe that photographing the landscape is important because of the rapid change and deterioration of parts of our surroundings. Images remind people of what is here and what has been lost. For some, it might be a call to action to protect what we have so that the landscape is preserved for generations to come.
My aim in this project was to record the landscape but do so with more artistic expression, using software and image manipulation. Photography can be an experience and a feeling, not just the click of the shutter.
The public is invited to visit the SMAHC art gallery and talk with the artist at a reception from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM on January 12, 2012. Regular Gallery hours are Monday - Friday, 8 AM to 12 and 1:00 - 4:30 PM, located in Suite 600, 1210 East College Drive, Marshall. Enter through the glass door on the east side of the building.
