Talking about his work, Boedigheimer shared that many methods may be used to heat a kiln to fire pottery, but wood-fired kilns add a little something extra. Boedigheimer says, “Wood-firing is more traditional,
more earthy, using natural materials. It results in a certain amount of spontaneity. I like a little mystery, a little chance. Ash from a wood-fired kiln can mix with glaze in unusual ways, creating unique patterns. Mixing your own glazes allows you to change ingredients to try and guide your results.” Boedigheimer also has been experimenting with using coiled rope techniques to impress patterns into the clay, resulting in pottery that is pleasing to the eye and interesting to touch.
The public is invited to visit the SMAHC gallery in downtown Marshall to meet Chris Boedigheimer at a reception from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, May 2. Regular Gallery hours are Monday - Friday, 8 am to noon and 1:00 to 4:30 pm.
