Barb Hawes "Ekphrastic Journeys"
Ekphrastic Journeys is a multidimensional exploration of my relationship with the world of art and poetry. It is a collection of five book sculptures each presenting six ekphrastic-inspired poems in non-traditional forms.
The six poems express defining moments in my understanding of art. These defining moments center on six works of art that I either saw in museums or studied in my art history classes. The first four book sculptures, titled Constructions I-IV, convey aspects of the creative process I experienced while writing the poems. The fifth book sculpture, titled Bound, ties them all together as the paths of my journeys intersect

The fifth book sculpture, titled Bound, ties them all together as the paths of my journeys intersect
in windows upon which the poems are presented. The intent of these sculptures is to invite the reader into my creative journey.
In any creative process, there are always unexpected turns and detours. The six drawings occurred as explorations of how to visually convey my experiences with each work of art. The poem for each work written continuously in the background offsets a phrase that developed from the poem. The medallion is the model for the windows that I used in Ekphrastic Journeys: Bound.
And, as for the chapbook, which was never in the plan: well, I just love to set and print type.
