WASO Holiday Concert 2023 – DANCE REVOLUTION!:

Worthington Area Symphony Orchestra plans to kick off their 14th season with a concert at Memorial Auditorium Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, entitled Dance Revolution! The term “revolution” definitely describes the line-up of dance music slated for this project as WASO musicians tackle an exciting package of flashy, fun, fiery, and famous orchestral dance tunes. A clarinet duo featured on the second half, and holiday tunes at the end of the concert will round out this event with something for everyone to enjoy.

From the powerfully energetic, percussion-driven dance of Saint-Saëns’s Bacchanale, to the lively and full of national character Slavonic Dances by Dvořák, combined with Florence Price’s refreshingly beautiful and flowing melodic themes of Dances in the Canebrakes, this concert will be packed with variety and contrast. Continuing with dance-themed selections, WASO will perform the wildly popular Danzón No. 2 by Arturo Márquez, the iconic French dance Farandole by Georges Bizet, and a few classic German Dances by beloved composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

German composer Felix Mendelssohn wrote Concert Piece No. 2 in D minor, op. 114 for Two Clarinets and Orchestra. To bring this music to life, WASO will proudly present our principal clarinetist, Erin Livingston, along with her renowned teacher, Christopher Hill. A customary closer for WASO’s November holiday concert will feature three seasonal favorites. Those pieces are Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride, Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24, and local composer Dan Goeller’s Christmas Carol Sing-Along.

Prominent composers from the Classic, Romantic, and Contemporary music history eras have been selected for this program. Well known repertoire by Camille Saint-Saëns, Antonín Dvořák, Florence Price, Arturo Márquez, Felix Mendelssohn, Georges Bizet, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Leroy Anderson, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Dan Goeller will be our biggest line-up of composers for WASO musicians to explore, discover, study and experience thus far. French, Czech, German, African-American, American, and Mexican musical styles will be a valuable and rewarding Arts project for members of the Worthington Area Symphony Orchestra to engage in and to share with our community. WASO’s Holiday Concert for November 2023 promises to challenge and inspire both our musicians and our audience.
