Event Details

Minnesota West Community & Technical college will present a three-act Penny Dreadful by Charles Ludlam, The Mystery of Irma Vep at the Fine Arts Theater on April 22-24. Directed by Eric E. Parrish, the fast change show features Kalen Brands and Michael Schnieder playing 8 characters with over 30 costume changes in 100 minutes.

The Mystery of Irma Vep is a satire of several theatrical and film genres, including Victorian melodrama, farce, and the 1940 Alfred Hitchcock film Rebecca. Lady Enid has just married Lord Edgar Hillcrest and moved to his ancestral home on the moors, Mandacrest. Lord Edgar’s first wife, Irma Vep, was killed by a warewolf attack, but he still keeps her portrait on the mantelpiece. The house is also populated by two servants, the one-legged handyman Nicodemus Underwood and Jane Twisden the maid who serves her own interests. The audience also meets an Egyptian guide and an ancient mummy throughout the entendre-filled show. The show portrays traditional horror film characters and features bawdy humor. We consider parents/guardians to be the best decision-makers on what is appropriate for their children and families.

The Mystery of Irma Vep runs April 22 and 23, at 7:30 p.m., and a matinee performance on April 24 at 2:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theater on the Worthington Campus of Minnesota West Community & Technical College. Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for children, Minnesota State Student and Employees IDs can be used for free admission. All tickets are general admission and will be available one hour before the performance: 1450 Collgeway, Worthington, MN 56187.
