Marshall: SMSU Visiting Writers Series Heid E Erdrich

Charter Hall 201: the 2025-2026 Visiting Writers Series kicks off with a reading from Heid E. Erdrich, inaugural poet laureate of Minneapolis, author of nine books of prose and poetry, curator, and teacher.

After the reading and Q&A, free and open to the public, copies of Erdrich’s 2024 collection Verb Animate: Poetry and Prompts from Collaborative Acts (Trio House Press), which explores the nuances and joys of Erdrich’s collaborations with visual and performance artists, will be available for purchase and signing.

Erdrich edited the anthology New Poets of Native Nations and co-edited the newly published Boundless: Abundance in Native American Art and Literature. Erdrich held the 2025 James Welch Distinguished Visiting position at University of Montana Missoula. Erdrich’s on-going project is Poetry Service Announcement (PoeS.A.) which promotes poetry as public art. An enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain band of Ojibwe, she serves her communities through formal and informal mentorship, poetry interventions, and in activating collaborative response between communities.
