Kimberly Brown to Present Concert, Breakfast Program During MLK Events at Southwest Minnesota State University
Marshall, Minn. — “Celebrating the Unsung Heroines of the Civil Rights Movement” is the theme for events surrounding Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2022 at Southwest Minnesota State University.
Kimberly Brown, a former member of the three-time Grammy Award-winning group Sounds of Blackness, will play a key role in the MLK celebration events, set for Sunday, Jan. 16 and Monday, Jan. 17.
Brown will give a concert at 7 p.m. on Jan. 16 at the Schwan Community Center for the Performing Arts at Marshall High School. The concert is free and open to the public.
She will follow that up by presenting the keynote address at the MLK Breakfast on Jan. 17 from 7:30-9:30 a.m. in the Conference Center Ballroom on campus. Brown will weave together the music of the era with stories of women’s influence, to match the breakfast’s theme of “Women of the Movement.”
The breakfast is open to the public. Pre-registration for in-person attendance and the live stream of the event can be found here: www.smsu.edu/go/mlk.
Following the breakfast, there will be a Food 4 Kids meal-packing event from 10 a.m.-noon at the Agape Fellowship Church in Marshall, 301 North High St. Transportation to the church is available. Vans will leave from the Conference Center at 9:45 a.m.
The Mustang Market, the University’s food pantry, will be collecting food and personal care items from Jan. 10-22. Cash donations are very much welcome, also.
Those unable to attend the events but want to support service to the SMSU community are asked to donate to the Mustang Market.
MLK Day events are sponsored by AOS, ODI, Provost’s Office and the Center for Civic and Community Engagement.
