Brandwein, Chatterton Concert Nov. 12 at SMSU

Marshall, Minn. — Harpist Rachel Brandwein and flutist Linda Chatterton will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12 in the Fine Arts Theatre on the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University.

The two are part of the university’s ongoing Visiting Artists series. They will work with SMSU students in a master class on Nov. 13, said Director of Bands John Ginocchio.

The two artists will perform the world premiere of a new piece by Brandwein entitled “Minnesota City Sketches.” This four-movement work is inspired by the cities where the tour performances will take place. “Marshall: The Great Railroad, The Great Blizzard, Loss, Return” is Movement 2.

They’ve performed together since 2013 and their collaboration has included concert tours in the U.S. and the Far East.

Brandwein is an adjunct faculty member at SMSU and is featured in solo, chamber and orchestral work. She also composes pieces for harp, organ and horn ensembles. Several of her compositions have been performed on tours and at conferences, and have won several awards in the process.

Chatterton has performed at events all over the U.S. and Europe. She is the only flutist to twice receive a McKnight Artist Fellowship for Musicians. The American Record Guide described her as “The kind of perform(er) that sparks wild standing ovations.”

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
