Explanation of the project: Madison Healthcare Services (MHS) project promotes art while offering healing benefits to patients and residents. There is a long hallway that connects MHS’s care center to the hospital and clinic; this is referred to as “the link.”  The link is used by hospital patients, care center residents, family members, staff, and community members that walk in the link during the winter months for exercise. Prior to this project, the link was very plain and had an institutional feel. The project aimed to change that thru the power of art. As we are all aware, healing involves many different elements and components.  Physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health all play a role in oneself. MHS created an art gallery in the link that can assist in one’s mental health. Having a calming space that staff or family members can bring a patient or resident to. The MHS will promote 13 local artists in the space. Each artist would have 3-4 pieces of art in “their area.”  MHS then owns the pieces of artwork to display and promote in the link.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
