Event Details

The Madison Mercantile will host an event on April 13 to honor the legacy of Robert Bly, Carol Bly, and the many other great writers that have called western Minnesota home. “Poetry on the Prairie” will begin at 3pm with a writing workshop led by poet Athena Kildegaard, Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota, Morris. The workshop will create an opportunity for writers of all skill levels to engage creatively with the poetry of Robert Bly. Individuals with no knowledge or prior experience with poetry are welcome and encouraged to participate.

A light meal will be served starting at 5pm. Coffee, tea, wine, beer, and other beverages will be available for purchase. At 6pm, there will be readings from Kildegaard and Brendan Stermer, originally of Montevideo. Kildegaard is the author, most recently, of “Prairie Midden” (Tinderbox Editions, 2022). Stermer is the author of “Forgotten Frequencies,” winner of the 2023 Poetry of the Plains and Prairie’s Award and published by North Dakota State University Press in December. Stermer’s reading will include information on local literary history and the influence of western Minnesota writers on different aspects of the collection.

A “Poetry Potluck” will commence at 7pm. This will be an opportunity for anyone in attendance to share a poem that they love and say a bit about what it means to them. Participants are especially encouraged to share a poem by Robert Bly or another local writer. Stories about the Bly’s are also welcome – in addition to original poems and songs.

This event on the 10th is made possible in part by a grant provided by the Northwest Minnesota Arts Council through funding from The McKnight Foundation.
