Congressman Walz is looking forward to another year of showcasing art from southern Minnesota for the Minnesota’s First Congressional District Congressional Art Competition. This competition is open to all students in grades 9-12 who live in Minnesota’s First Congressional District or attend high school in the district. You can confirm this by visiting here. The following counties in our region are eligible: Cottonwood, Jackson, Nobles, and Rock. Deadline for application is MARCH 23, 2018. Please submit the framed entry and Student Information and Release From to the Rochester or Mankato district office by the deadline.

Exhibition of works is at the Rochester Public Library from March 30 through April 26 were professional artists will determine the winner of the competition, which will be announced by Congressman Tim Walz on April 16, 2018. The winning student will be invited to the exhibition opening and reception in Washington, D.C. and receive two round-trip tickets by a private airline. The exhibit will be on display at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. for one year. Runners-up will have the opportunity to have their artwork displayed in the district office for one year as well.

This contest is an exciting national showcase of America’s young artists and offers the opportunity to display their talent in our nation’s capital.
Accepted mediums for the two-dimensional artwork are as follows:
- Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
- Drawings: colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal (It is recommended that charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed.)
- Collages: must be two dimensional
- Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
- Mixed Media: use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.
- Computer-generated art
- Photographs
Rep. Walz was honored last year to announce that Cassidy Hill, a high school student at Le Sueur-Henderson, won the 2017 Congressional Art Competition. In her winning art piece, Blind Beauty, Cassidy using acrylic paint, created a woman with butterflies. It can be viewed at this link.
