October 1, Meander Art Crawl along the upper MN River. October 1: 9am-4 pm. The award winning Meander Art Crawl is a free self-guided tour of artist studios featuring 45 local artists from the Upper Minnesota River Valley. This event has more than 33 individual studios in and near the Western Minnesota Communities of Ortonville, Appleton, Madison, Milan, Dawson, Montevideo and Granite Falls. October 1, 2 pm, Southwest Minnesota Orchestra Concert, Schwan Community Center for the Performing Arts, Marshall HS, 400 Tiger Dr, Marshall. An All-American Celebration, SMSU at 50. The concert will feature the music of:
• Aaron Copland, “Old American Songs,” featuring Ryan Ross, 2017 Graduate of the Last Decade (GOLD) Alumni Award winner and professional opera singer
• Robert Whitcomb, “Ear Abounding,” music to poetry by Phil Dacey
• Peter Lothringer, “A New Time to Sing,” choral fanfare on the poetry of Walt Whitman
• John Williams, featuring music from “Star Wars,” “E.T.” and others.
Also featured will be the SMSU Chorale, Dr. Stephen Kingsbury, conductor, and George Gerschwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” Dr. John Ginocchio, conductor, with Dr. Daniel Rieppel, soloist. Tickets are $15 at the door. Students with a school ID, and children, are free.

October 4, 9:15am-12:25pm, “Southwest Minnesota Workforce Council’s” Career Expo, MN West – Center for Sports and Fitness in Worthington.
SMAC will have a booth at the “Southwest Minnesota Workforce Council’s” Career Expo to explore with high school students possible careers in the arts. Nicole, SMAC’s Executive Director, will be there with an interactive painting project! Stop by and visit with her!

October 5, 5 pm, SMAC Grant Workshop for Arts in the Schools Grants, SMAC Office, 114 N 3rd St, Marshall. Workshop lead by SMAC staff specifically for the Arts in the Schools grants and interested applicants. Workshop may be canceled if low registrants. October 7, 7:30am-12pm, Music at the Market, Marshall Area YMCA Parking Lot, 200 S A St., Marshall. Upper Sioux Youth Drummers and Dancers, a group of youth from the Upper Sioux who perform with traditional drums and in traditional dress, at the Marshall Farmer’s Market.

October 8, 4 pm, Anderson Brothers Jazz Combo Performance, Schwan Community Center for the Performing Arts, Marshall HS, 400 Tiger Dr, Marshall. October 13, 5:30 pm, Artist Reception: Being Human by Eva Margaret, Hutchinson Center for the Arts, 15 Franklin St SW, Hutchinson. Free and open to the public and includes informal gallery talk by the artist. Being Human is on view October 9 – November 7, 2017. Eva Margaret’s works explore what it means to be human.
